| Where do you find Openstreetmap in Wikimapia? I can see Panoramio, but not Openstreetmap... |

@udntkwi: Yes, me too. Definitely something for admin to deal with.
@stcraftie59: What? You don't see Openstreetmap immediately underneath Panoramio? Strange! I can, and it's been there for about a week by now. |

The exact message:
Access blocked. We suspect this client is downloading maps in an unauthorised manner. Please ask at irc.openstreetmap.org |

Add-on: if you have an Opera browser, you may turn off referrer information (Opera/Menu/Settings/Preferences/Network - uncheck "Send referrer information") Openstreetmap works OK (on imagery which is not cached in OPera), it means that Openstreetmap manually did this "random" message for "Wikimapia.org" website. We will see what can be done. |

As I see one main concern of OpenStreetMap that users in Wikimapia "are encouraged" to use OpenStreetMap to get information and the result cannot be commercially used. So we will remove the possibility to draw over OpenStreetMap layer.
p.s. BTW funny we didn't receive any access blocks or copyright questions from commercial Google. |

They are saying we are tracing their work onto Wikimapia.
I would reply that it would be impossible to do because you can add and edit 'only' in Satellite and Classic mode, but it wouldn't be worthwhile to join just to sent that little factoid. |

| It is done, now it's not possible to edit in OpenStreetMap mode (however it's really discouraging that an open project closes access to the information because someone could possibly draw over it's imagery). If this "access deny" will continue, then we will need to remove broken layer. Sorry guys. |

He is old Wikimapian, and maybe users in OpenStreetMap "are encouraged" to use Wikimapia to get information. |

IRC chat:
<leonardo_> Hi, Wikimapia has as layer OSM, but osm access is blocked on Wikimapia, because wikimapia had an option to draw on top of osm layer <leonardo_> but they removed the option to draw on top of osm <leonardo_> as you can see here:wikimapia.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6993&last=1#last <leonardo_> Could the access be allowed again? <JonathanB> leonardo_: If they don't want to trace over it, what's the point? <leonardo_> <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="help.openstreetmap.org/questions/1429/">help.openstreetmap.org/questions/1429/<!-- m --> <leonardo_> they don't want to trace over osm <leonardo_> before was <leonardo_> so the access was blocked by osm <leonardo_> but now it's not possible over top of osm layer anymore <leonardo_> so I think the access should be allowed again <iandees> leonardo_, it is still possible to trace over OpenStreetMap layers by issuing some commands in javascript. <leonardo_> really? * ndby (<!-- e --><a href="mailto:~ndby@p5DF546CF.dip.t-dialin.net">~ndby@p5DF546CF.dip.t-dialin.net<!-- e -->) entrou em #osm <leonardo_> I'll write it on wikimapia forum <iandees> if you're interested in looking at OpenStreetMap maps (and not tracing them), we offer a map at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="openstreetmap.org/">openstreetmap.org/<!-- m --> <leonardo_> ok? <JonathanB> leonardo_: No! The whole point is that Wikimapia is breaking OSM's licensing conditions. <JonathanB> We do not want our Free data included in Wikimapia's closed, proprietary database <iandees> leonardo_, the reason we continue to block Wikimapia is that the only reason to display a map tile there is to trace over it. <leonardo_> no <leonardo_> I don't agree <iandees> what do you use it for? <leonardo_> I see services that split to windows comparing google with osm <leonardo_> and it's allowed <iandees> yes, that's because we are comparing. we don't allow tracing over Google Maps. <leonardo_> But they will not allow trace over osm anymore <leonardo_> so will be the same thing <Komzpa> er, google maps don't allow tracing over it :) <iandees> leonardo_ as long as the OpenStreetMap layer is in the editor, it is still technically possible to trace <leonardo_> hum <leonardo_> maybe I agree, I just wanted to have a fast way to compare wikimapia, google, and osm <leonardo_> on wikimapia <leonardo_> I wouldn't like to trace wikimapia over the osm layer <leonardo_> was not my intetion <leonardo_> intention <leonardo_> so will be blocked permanently? <leonardo_> ? |

Strange. Wikimapia which is stated "closed, proprietary database" do not mind people use it's database to "trace" over it and has no restrictions for use except commercial ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/terms_reference.html">wikimapia.org/terms_reference.html<!-- m --> ). Google which is "closed and proprietary" also don't mind to use it's maps. Opentreetmap which is "open database" with allowed commercial use has very strange limitations such as "still technically possible to trace" etc.

| Our main idea was that people take data from API and use it, convert it to whatever format. Unfortunately this isn't good for people who does not have programming skills, we are working on it, so people will be able download data for common use also. |

> Google which is "closed and proprietary" also don't mind to use it's maps. Actually, they do mind. Cut from their TOS: -------------------------- 10. License Restrictions ... Except as explicitly permitted in Section 7 or the Maps APIs Documentation, you must not (nor may you permit anyone else to): 10.2 copy, translate, modify, create a derivative work of, or publicly display any Content or any part thereof ----------end------------- I remember a long time ago when anyone could switch to google map layer and tag on it. Then after time the editor was disabled and you have to switch to satellite view to edit. |
