WikiMapia FAQ About WikiMapia WikiMapia is a Web 2.0 project to describe the whole planet Earth. It was created by Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev, inspired by Google maps and Wikipedia. How to help us? - Tell all your friends about WikiMapia. Submit WikiMapia to news sites and forums. The more people who know about WikiMapia the better it will be - information will be fresher and more accurate! - Add new interesting places - Modify place information where needed - Add information in English where to places described in another language (or translate what is there - Google Translate and Babel Fish could be your friends). Can I see Wikimapia places at Google Earth? Yes. If you have Google Earth installed you may click on our Wikimapia data layer for Google Earth. You may read some more info at Matt blog. Why I should register. We are adding more and more functionality to Wikimapia. Some of these functions are available only to registered users and especially to ranked users (to avoid vandalism). Registration is free. User levels. Level 0 (Unregistered and newly registeres users) - simple functions like add/edit place, add photos. Some restrictions to avoid vandalism. Level 1 (Registered users) - almost all available functions. Level 2 (Advanced users) - all functions and some administrative privileges (protect article, etc.). How to add a place? Click to Add Place at the top left of your screen. A detailed step-by-step guide can be found here, on Matt Jones Blog. Polygons: How to add a place that is not a rectangle? We allow you to add polygons, but only after you first create a place with a rectangle. Look here for detailed instructions. Polygons are limited to 150 points at present. Road: may we add roads? Functionality to mark roads will be introduced soon. Private places. Private places usually mark personal homes. Do not add silly information. Instead, provide an informative description, eg: Title: 3478, Rainbow street. Tanya and Alice home. Description: A nice green house with red roof where I, Tanya, live with my sister Alice, mom Anne and dad Alex. Nice garden there and a swimming pool. Address: 3478, Rainbow street, Mytown. Silly places like "I live here, I've been there" should be deleted. What is "upcoming place"? It's a new place that needs to be verified. For a full explanation see here, at Matt Jones Blog. How to delete a wrong place? You must be a registered user. Click on the place to open its place window then select delete from the menu at top-left of the window. The place will be deleted after a delay that depends on your user level. How to delete a wrong upcoming place? Just vote against it by clicking "No". Upcoming places: how many votes...? To be approved a place: -must be at least 24 hours old; -must have more than 2 positive votes (yes) and 0 negative (no); -with 1 negative vote, it needs at least 6 positive; -places with only 2 positive votes and 0 negative will be automatically approved after few days. Places with more than 1 negative vote will be deleted. We may tune these parameters in future. Someone made bad comment, how to remove it. If you see some bad words in a description or title - you may edit them, point your mouse over MENU (in the top-left corner of the place window) and click 'Edit this page'. If it is in the place’s comments area, you may press the 'report abuse message' icon near the name of the abusive person - the message will be hidden, and if there are 5 abuse clicks the message will be deleted. My town/village is not clear, impossible to zoom in. Images are updating by Google maps team, soon all the planet will be covered. Can I use Wikimapia with GPS device? Yes, you can.
