During the cold war, after the 2nd world war, which lasted until the fall of the Berlin wall 1989, and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, an underground fortress was built on Denmark’s East coast in 1953. After the military vacated the fortress in year 2000, a group of determined enthusiasts managed to secure the fortress as a museum through donations from amongst others HRH the Queen of Denmark’s foundation and the A.P. Møller foundation.
The Museum opened 1st July 2008.

Stevns Fort was built in 1953, in order to monitor the southern entrance to the Sound between Denmark and Sweden. The fortress is the only one in Denmark which is built in rock, except gun towers, radio and radar antennas, all related installations were 18-20 meters beneath the surface in the limestone cliff.
The fortress comprised more than 1.6km (1 mile) of corridors 18-20 meters underground, ammunition magazines, residential facilities, engineering centers, hospital, artillery center, and even a mortuary was thought of. The fortess’ original main battery consisted of 2 armored double towers with 15cm cannons. The cannons had a range of approx. 23km (14 miles) and were able to shoot all the way across the sea to the Swedish coast.
The cannons were until 1943 originally installed on board the German battleship Gneisenau, after which they were installed in the German built battery Grådyb on Fanø on the West coast of Denmark. When the Stevns Fort was built in 1953, they were moved from Fanø to Stevns.
In the corridors of Stevns Fort, you can touch some of the animals that lived 65 million years ago. The corridors tell the story of lime and flint, and stories about the great mass extinction, which 65 million years ago wiped out two thirds of all animal and plant species, including dinosaurs.
