The above information "Tank by ahom king Sargadew Gauri nath singha" is totally distortion of historical facts. The king Gaurinathsimha was the nephew of King Sivasimha, who ruled this country from A.D. 1780to A.D 1791. The actual story is, this tank "Gaursagar" was founded by Pramatheswari @ Phuleswari @ Phulmati, the first queen of Tai-Ahom king Siutanpha @ Sivasimha who ruled from A.D. 1714-to A.D. 1744, the eldest son of King Rudrasimha @ Siukhrungpha A.D. 1696-1714.

The place was originally known as "Namdang Bahar", "Phukanphadiya" @ "Phukan Phoidiya" a place of Phukan clan, Phukans were important nobles of the TaiAhoms etc.

Phuleswari, the queen of Sivasimha arranged to excavate this tank in the name of Goddess Maha-Gauri, (incidentally, she is the wife of king Sivasimha and he was estimated as "Lord Shiva" and herself as Goddess Maha-Gauri, wife of Lord Shiva and accordingly she named the tank as "Gaurisagar" either to commemorate Goddess Gauri or her own name). But from the historical record, it is evident that she was a strong believer of Sakta pantheon. So it is likely that she actually excavated this tank to commemorate the name of Goddess Maha-Gauri instead of her own name so the name Gaurisagar.
Here the word "Sagar" is to denote a big tank, which is having at least more than 400 Bighas (1 Bigha =14,440 square feet) of land also a tank whose conscreation ceremony is performed by the hundreds of Brahmin.

On the bank of Gaurisagar tank there rest temples of Lord Shiva, Goddess Gauri and Vishnu.

It is a growth center today.

Gaurisagar was known as "Silpukhuri" during the rule of Kacharis, sometimes in A.D. 11th century to A.D. 12th century. The famous Silpukhuri of the Kacharis rests close to Gaurisagar.

The other important relics nearby Gaurisagar are: Khanakhokurapukhuri, Bhatiaparpukhuri, Teliadongapukhuri, Sonaibahar, Rupahijan, Namdang Silsaku, Vaults of Lanmakhru family, Magloupukhuri, Barali, Machkhowagarh, Ajanpir Dargarh etc.

Gaurisagar is connected with medieval Tai-Ahom encampment, Genral Chilarai also made an encampment here, Mughal post, Moamariya encampment, Burmese post, British Administrator Mr. and Mrs Wood, Mr. Bordie pitched their tent here.

NB: Small correction -The Tai-Ahom king Gaurinathsimha was the son of King Laksminathsimha A.D. 1669-1680 brother of King Sivasimha whose tenure should be A.D. 1680-94 instead of A.D. 1680-91.
