A fresh-water river that flows west and north through the East River Valley and past the towns of Stellarton, New Glasgow and Trenton in north-central Nova Scotia. The river meets at a confluence with West and Middle Rivers at Pictou Harbour, a salt-water estuary on the Northumberland Straight. As far south as New Glasgow the river as affected by coastal tides and is also slightly saltier as it approaches the estuary.
The head of the river is located just west of Eden Lake and east of the village of Sunnybrae, NS along the Sunrise Trail.
