Local engineer Richard Trevithick developed the high pressure steam system that originally powered two beam engines. These operated the winding gear that transported men and ore through the mineshafts and to pump out water from depths of around 1800ft.
The Industrial Discovery Centre on the same site provides insight into Cornwall's industrial heritage.
