According to the head of Information at MOE, Irina Andrianova, the Boeing 737-500 aircraft took off from Sheremetyevo airport at 1:12 in Moscow. Communication with pilots ceased at 3:10 Moscow time (5:10 local time), when the aircraft was at the altitude of 1100 meters. Within 30 minutes (which is a long time!), the airliner with its right engine (nr 2) on fire, crashed to the ground at a steep angle of 30-40 degrees. The crash site lies within the city limits of Perm, on its SW outskirts, The aircraft was on vector approach (straight line) to the Bolshoye Savino Airport runway, 16 km SW of the city. The resultant explosion threw burning debris on unimproved terrain as well as damaged the track of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, causing its temporary shutdown, and necessitated its rerouting through another city with a bridge over a river.
The fire at the crash site was fully contained within 15 minutes.
