In 1923, a catastrophic earthquake struck the Tokyo-Yokohama area. More than one hundred thousand people perished in the earthquakes and resulting fires. Tokyo Earthquake Memorial was founded in 1930 to honor the victims of the disaster, and serve as a final resting place for the remains of the unidentified victims. The museum also memorialized the victims of the U.S firebombing air raid of Mar 10, 1945.
