Circa 16th Century: Reputedly received it’s name from the place where smugglers sank their contraband in an effort to fool the Customs Revenue vessels petrolling ‘the Burnham river’.

Footnote: In the Customs records the river Crouch was always referred to as ‘the Burnham river’.
