Bloomsbury Square Gardens (London)

United Kingdom / England / London / Bloomsbury Square
 park, playground

Nice little park. Small children's playground.

This is one of the older squares, built to keep an open space in front of Bedford House, the Earl of Southampton's mansion which took up the whole north-west side. The Earl's family moved here when the square behind their house in the Strand became Covent Garden market. A building lease was granted for the Bloomsbury estate by Charles II in 1661, the area was so large that it took 200 years before it was all built up. Bedford House was demolished in 1800 as part of the Bedford Estates' continuing property developments. The demolition contractor had to pay the owners £5,250 for the furniture and fittings.
