The Embroidery Institute has existed in some kind of form since the Japanese occupation of northeast Asia. It has been located at this site since 1978. It is a center for the production of traditional Korean textile arts. The Institute has produced internationally award-winning tapestries. In its post occupation incarnation it was visited several times by Kim Jong Suk, the so-called Revolutionary Mother of the DPRK, who was President Kim il Sung's first wife and mother of General Kim Jong il. The Institute contains a museum of its history and serves as a location for international visitors to see Korean textiles under production. It employs seventy historians, experts and textile artists.
