Parsik Tunnel-Kalwa

India / Maharashtra / Thana /
 invisible, railway tunnel

This was the FIRST Tunnel to dug for railway line in India. It is approximately a MILE long i.e. ~1.6 Km long. It boasted of the LONGEST tunnel on Indian railways for much longer span of time.
This tunnel also shows excellence of Civil Engineering at that time, since it was dug from both side at a time & there was no ERROR in marking out the route for drillers.Experts exhort the railways to ensure that Kalwa rail bridge and Parsik tunnel are protected. "Parsik tunnel, built 150 years ago, is the first mile-long tunnel to be constructed in the history of Indian Railways. It was built to shorten the way to Kalyan from Mumbai and is an engineering marvel of its time." Historians suggest that the railways build a small museum. "It will also attract tourists,"

  • I have enjoyed this ride on to this tunnel by fast local trains. It is really breezy inside.
  • Most of the fast locals coming from Kalyan or from mumbai bypass through Parsik Tunnel which is 1.3 km in length and it was one time third largest tunnel of Asia. This tunnel lies on the fast track and has one entry/exit point in Mumbra. It is the first railway tunnel that was built in India and is more than hundred years old, by the British Empire. Its in the Sahyadri Ranges of Maharashtra and those hills are known as Parsik Hills.
  • Almost everyday I travels through this tunnel by boarding in the fast train.
  • I LIKE VERY MUCH IT TRAVELS IN WINTER REASON.
  • As it is a historic mile stone achievement in indian Railway history of central railway the condition today is worst, to preserve this achievement some change towards CST end is necessary which is possible but towards kalyan side is impossible
  • you say This was the FIRST Tunnel to dug for railway line in India.how it is possible because it was open in year 1916. before opening of this tunnel and this track more tunnel and track had been open in 1853 when first train run. there were some tunnel available in Boribunder-thane section when first train run in 1853.
