The May 4, 1970, Site and Memorial commemorate the events of that day when protests against the Vietnam War ended in a confrontation with the Ohio National Guard, leaving four students dead and nine wounded. The memorial, designed by artist Bruno Ast and dedicated in 1990, encourages all who visit to “Inquire, Learn and Reflect” on how differences may be resolved peacefully. Each spring 58,175 daffodils, which were planted at the site at the suggestion of Professor Emeritus of Art Brinsley Tyrrell, symbolize the country’s losses in Vietnam. In 1999 as a result of requests from the May 4 Task Force, the university authorized the installation of markers locating the sites in the Prentice Hall parking lot where the four students were killed on May 4, 1970.
