Youngstown is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The municipality is situated on the Mahoning River, approximately 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Cleveland and 61 miles (100 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Youngstown has its own metropolitan area, but is overlapped by Pittsburgh Tri-State and Greater Cleveland. Youngstown lies 10 miles (16 km) west of the Pennsylvania state line, midway between New York City and Chicago.

The city was named for John Young, an early settler from Whitestown, New York, who established the community's first sawmill and gristmill. Youngstown is located in a region of the United States that is often referred to as the Rust Belt. Traditionally known as a center of steel production, Youngstown was forced to redefine itself when the U.S. steel industry fell into decline in the 1970s, leaving communities throughout the region without major industry. The 2000 census showed that Youngstown had a total population of 82,026, making it Ohio's eighth largest city. A 2007 U.S. Census Bureau estimate released in July 2008 placed the population at 73,818.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2007 estimate, the Youngstown-Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) contains 570,704 people and includes Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio, and Mercer County in Pennsylvania. The Steel Valley area as a whole (including Youngstown-Warren and Sharon-Farrell-New Castle, Pennsylvania) comprises 679,402 residents.

  • Well, you've certainly proven the negative attitudes(sp), but the fact is Youngstown has been improving every year since the "dark times" of the 1980's, and while its not perfect, its still home for a lot of good people.
  • Youngstown is changing. Maybe not like other "booming" cities of the south, but compared to cities like Detroit and Flint it is changing. Youngstown actually had population growth and that says something good about the city. The downtown is alive with many people coming to work in the area. Now clubs and restaurants are opening up. Has anyone heard of Youngstown 2010? In 2010 Youngstown will start a new project where the city is going to be opening up thousands of acres of Green Space. That means new parks all over the city. Bye to the old factories, and hello to new parks. Youngstown is home to a lot. The Eastwood Mall, one of the countries largest malls, MillCreek Park, the second largest urban park in the nation after Central Park in New York. Youngstown has a lot to offer. Things are changing and that negative attitude will wear off as people realize this change.
  • Zach, not to be rude but you need to check your facts. The Eastwood mall isn't in Youngstown it is in Niles and it isn't very large in comparison to most malls in the state let alone the nation. There is not a mall in Youngstown. While mill creek park is beautiful it is not of the countries largest. And Youngstown 2010 is not a plan for creating green space. It is a comprehensive plan that started a few years ago to rezone and refurbish Youngstown. New zoning laws, new libraries, new infrastructure, and, yes, new green spaces are included within the plan. Change is happening in Youngstown. The city is redefining itself and a new found pride found within its people is undeniable. people do like to hate on Youngstown and that is just fine, they are pessimists and deserve no attention. nay-sayers will have to eat their words. Youngstown used to be a great place. it fell from grace but it is on the rebound.
  • Actually Zach is right, Mill Creek Metro Park is the second largest urban park in the nation, and the Eastwood Mall is in the Youngstown Metro, it doesn't matter if it is in the city itself. Please tell me a city where you find a major mall in the city? Mall of America is not in Minneapolis, it is in Bloomington.
