BAP Almirante Grau is the Flagship of the Peruvian Navy (Marina de Guerra del Perú) and currently the last operational all-gun Cruiser in active service in the world.
Laid down in 1941 and commissioned in 1953 for the Royal Netherlands Navy as the HNLMS De Ruyter, the Grau was sold to Peru in 1973 along with her sistership, the former HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën. Together these two vessels formed the backbone of the Peruvian Navy for the 1970, 80s & 90s.
With the decommissioning of her sistership in 1999, the Almirante Grau assumed the honor of being the last all gun Cruiser in operational service in the world, and her eight 6-inch guns are the largest guns of any kind carried on a seagoing warship today.
