Naked City District (Las Vegas, Nevada)

There are many stories how this small, hidden neighborhood got its name. The most likely is that the apartments here served as the main housing for many of the Fremont Street hotel/casino workers during the 1950s and 1960s - including showgirls and cocktail waitresses. To maintain a natural tan, but without unsightly tan lines, the ladies were rumored to lay by the pools topless and in very small bikini or panty bottoms.

In the the mid 1980s it turned into a rundown slum featuring low-income housing, gangs, drugs trafficking, homeless, and prostitutes. The crime and vice reached its peak in the late 90s to early 2000s with drug- and gang-related violent crime being a nightly occurrence. However, the crime rate has been on the decline since as many of the problem buildings and tenements were raised and through heavy local police activity partnered with community leaders being active in the area.

As the commercial potential for this section land is high (it will soon border the increasing Art District), the majority of the neighborhood is for now for sale to make way for new development.
