Gandipalem state reservoir was built here to save the villages in Udaygiri Mandal from famine during the summer season and to support irrigation for around 600 km² in faraway places from river Pennar.

The source of the reservoir is the river Manneru, a tributary of the river Pennar.

The 130 Km. river Manneru, starts near Pillipalli village of Kanigiri taluk of Prakasam district. The rivers Dokkalavagu, Uppuvagu, Pillaperu and Upputeru are the main tributaries of the Manneru river.
