MEANING OF THE VILLAGE NAME "CHINGMAI KHULLEN" OR "RAOVUMAI"
Chingmai Khullen village is a Naga village situated in the North East corner most of Senapati District, Manipur. The term "Chingmai Khullen" is a Manipuri word (Meiteilong), which means "The Hill People" and the word "Khullen" stand for old or origin village. Although Chingmai Khullen is the official name as per the Govt. Revenue record, the village is also known by the name "Raovumai" in Poula (Poumai dailect) which is literally defined as 'Rao' which means 'Bone', 'Vu' means 'Burry' and the last syllable 'Mai' stand for 'men' or 'people'. That, the nomenclature of the village "Raovumai" is the "Bone Buried People".
One may wonder to why our ancestors buried the bone. It is interesting to learnt and worth mentioning that when our ancestors selected the place, they took an oath not to disperse but to stay on through thick and thin and to established a strong independent village by sacrificing and burying the bone. That, burying a bone with sacrifice signifies 'A Bond Agreement' among the leaders during those days. Hence, today, the village is known by the world as CHINGMAI KHULLEN or RAOVUMAI a village of bond agreement settling in the hill of Manipur.
