Cos Cob Movable Bridge (SS29)

Former New Haven Railroad double bascule type drawbridge currently serving the Metro North New Haven Line.

Bridge is notable for the catenary gap that electric trains must coast through. When the bridge was electrified in 1906 the experience did not exist to successfully string the overhead power supply through the movable span. When the wire was re-done in 2004 the gap was left in place.

The bridge is actually two independent bascule type lift spans. A regularly scheduled party boat leaving the harbour around 6pm allows one to view an opening from the 5:09 express out of Grand Central.

The bridge had NHRR interlocking designation SS29. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for its engineering and transportation significance.
