Kollam City

Kollam- Most neglected city/District in India
Kollam or Quilon, an old sea port town on the Arabian coast, stands on the Ashtamudi lake. Kollam, the erstwhile Desinganadu, had a sustained commercial reputation from the days of the Phoenicians and the Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was regarded by Ibn Batuta, as one of the five ports, which he had seen in the course of his travels during a period of twenty four years, in the 14th century. Kollam is widely known as the Cashew Paradise in Kerala, and affords a wide cultivation and processing techniques. Cashew processing and coir production are the two most important sources of employment.

Tourists places of Kollam include Thevally Palace, currently used by the Indian Army and the Dutch fort at Thangassery. Though most of it has been repainted, still the ambrosial palace displays a magnificent view from the lake.

The Ashtamudi lake with its scenic beauty, houseboats and ayurvedic centers also has plenty to offer. There are many breathtaking viewpoints to savor, including Padappakkara, Munroe Islands, Vellimon, Paravoor, Ashtamudi, Thevally etc.

Another place attracting tourist interest is Sathamkotta. The place is famous for the largest freshwater lake in the state. Sasthamkotta is connected to Kollam city by both railway and road.

Kollam is situated on NH 47 that links Salem to Kanyakumari, via Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Alappuzha.

The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, 71 km from Kollam city center.

Quilon or Kollam ist an ancient port Town.Quilon careses the Ashtamudilake and it in turn lends an unimaginalble naturalble beauty.

In the olden days it had comercial relations with far and near countries. It was a center of trade and commerce. It traded in cashews, cardomon, pepper, silk etc,It had contact, among others ,with Cylon and China. Later centuries the presence of Europeans, especially the Portughese traders ,was a commonplace.

The cotton mill, tile factories, cashew factores, ceramic and aluminium factories to mention a few, are its assets. The cottage industries like coir-making, coconutkernels(Copras), oilmills, fishing industries, offer the people employment in place without having to leave their Kollam and illams.

Socially and religiousally the people as a whole live in harmony for centuries.Temples, mosques and churches appear within a short stone`s throw.

Quilon is credited to have the second church or community, among the seven churchs, after the one in Kodungaloor, founded by Thomas the apostle in(52-78 AD), the deciple of Jesus Christ. The traditions narrate that the Church in Port Quilon is built in the place where the old church stood, which commemorated this event for hundereds years.

The city offers beautiful beaches. The setting sun transfers the whole coastal areas and the evening, multicolured sky , above the Arabian See, appears like an angels`city. The sunrise in eastern hills is of bewitching beauty.

The mountains and rivers are part of its treasures.Come and enjoy it for yourself.!
My only hope is , as you enjoy Kollam do not forget your Illam.

Historically the spanish missionary and jesuit priest St.Francis Xavier(*1506-1541- +1552)traversed the coasts of Travencore and brought the good news that God loves all people and all are brothers and sisters. The mortal remains of this saintly sage, are still preserved intact in a glass casket in Goa till today.

Fed by the Chinese trade, it was regarded by Ibn Batuta, as one of the five ports, which he had seen in the course of his travels during a period of twenty four years, in the 14th century.

Kollam District which is a veritable Kerala  in miniature is gifted with unique representative features - sea, lakes, plains, mountains, rivers, streams, backwaters, forest, vast green fields and tropical crop of every variety both food crop and cash crop, so called 'The Gods Own Capital'.

As of 2001 India census, Kollam had a population of 361,441. The density of population being 1037 persons per square kilometre. The sex ratio (the number of females per 1000 males) was 1070 during the census year of 2001. The district ranks sixth with respect to the population in the state. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Kollam has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 80%. In Kollam, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Kollam is widely known as the Cashew Paradise in Kerala, and affords a wide cultivation and processing techniques. Cashew processing and coir production are the two most important sources of employment.

The square-shaped clock tower, is visible from all parts of the Chinnakada market(city center). Tourists can visit the Thevally Palace, currently used by the Indian Army and the Dutch fort at Thangassery. Though most of it has been repainted, still the ambrosial palace displays a magnificent view from the lake.

Kollam is also close to the 'Tenmala' tea estates and spice county. Also the villages of Kollam district are very much blessed with natural beauties.

Another place attracting tourist interest is Sathamkotta. The place is famous for the largest freshwater lake in the state. Sasthamkotta is connected to Kollam city by both railway and road.

we have seen alot IT developments concentrating around TVM and kochi. A pvt+GoK inititives are happening around kochi. GoK concentrating alot on TVM with projects like Technoicity, etc. we are not against any developments in TVM or kochi. But the central travancore region(kollam, Allapey, pathanamthitta and kottayam) is totally neglected by TVM based babus. Whats need of 500 acre IT park in TVM expecially when a lot of land is avaiable in many phases technopark is available. why cant you guys start IT park in kollam? dont say abt infrastructure. You must know that distance between Electronic city in bangalore new aiport porosed is farer than TVM ariport and kollam. There is a clear discrimination towards kollam and most of the projects initiated as moved to TVM or just annnouncing a kerala project for TVM . Capital shud b only a governing capital. Each and every person/area/region in the state shud b able share the taste of development. Development shud not be centered around a city. it shud be symmetric throughout the state. Please dont come up with with paper projects like district park(spoke). we have heard this many times. There is a hidden agenda by some TVM based babus to scuttle all projects TVM. Please stop this. Its high time the people kollam and other parts of central travancore to think about a new state. i think thats the only solution. since we dont expect anything from TVM babus

Vijayan sir, i also bliv that all kerala Goverment(present LDF and previous UDF) are totaly anti-kollam. They dont want any development in kollam. we shud protest. we shud tell the people of kollam abt this neglect. Only people power can bring protest and hence the development. our 5 ministers like "Lavan kollathupoyapaole" Aanu. They are simply waste. gud for nothing. Same was the case with last UDF ministers from Kollam. they did bring any dev to kollam. All projects are in thiruvanathapuram only. we shud protest. All kollamites, please talk abt these things ordinary people in kollam. wake up and protest

I am 65, born and educated in kollam, visited kollam almost every year till 1990
and the changes I saw really worries me.The good old Quilon with clean beaches, backwaters, natural semi forests everything gone.Central kollam is the most affected.I have spent hours watching the busy eastern side of the kollam canal near the post office(Big Bazaar) and the heavy waterflow from south to north in some months and from north to south in some months.Kureepuza Banglow,Thevally Palace,Residency,Ashramam, the Beaches,Theschool Grounds, Bheerangi Maidan,Dozen Churches, Temples like Mulangadakam,Ashramam,Vishnathukavu and the related festivals,Colleges(fatima/sn/snw/tkm etc, all these have new looks and new culture now. What the Tourists get today from Quilon today is unthinkableby protect.ing the interest of the labour, all industries have been lost, people escaped to gulf or if not possible then to other states in india for livelyhood.
