This observation deck and the tower that rises up from it looks out over the Connecticut River valley, providing an excellent vantage point during leaf-peeping season. It is located on the spot of a "mountain house" that existed during the late 1800's and early 1900's. (Mountain houses were structures that local people constructed on top of mountains in the area to retire to for evening and weekend entertainments, though some became popular tourist attractions, and grew into much more than houses. The one on Mt. Tom just south in Holyoke, MA rivaled Niagra Falls in the number of visitors at one time.) The tower and observation deck are part of the Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation.
