Cedar Lake, Indiana

USA / Indiana / Cedar Lake /

The lakeside community of Cedar Lake has been a water-activities area and retreat people since the beginning of the last century. At one time, 47 hotels lined the shores of the lake. Even today, many water lovers flock to Cedar Lake for relaxation and recreation.

Lake of the Red Cedars Museum which can be visited during the summer months, was first built as a boarding house for ice workers. It went through the ownerships of Armour (of the meats and hotdog company), John Shedd (of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago) , Lassen (who moved the structure to its present location across the frozen lake), a religious assembly (which transformed the grounds to a recreational facility), and now the Cedar Lake Historical Association.

Dr. Scholl, the famous foot doctor, began his practice in Cedar Lake, Indiana. Al Capone also once owned property on the lake.

  • Cedar Lake is also known for the number of lawn mowers, cars, and sheerly incredible amounts of fecal matter floating in the water. As a result, during the summer months, you can gaze across the brown water to see an amazingly thick fog of various insects feeding on the waste rich waters. Residents of Cedar Lake prefer to be called "Lake Rats." A local nickname for Cedar Lake is Cedartucky.
  • he's totally, cedartucky is freaking gross.
  • i'd prefer that it keep it's "reputation", better that fewer people discover it. we bought a lakefront home for a very reasonable price, can get there from downtown chicago in 90 minutes...
  • Cedar Lake has been abused and neglected for many years, probably by kin of the first 2 commentors, because they sound too young and immature to remember when it was a nice lake. Those kind can just stay away while I enjoy my lake front home and watch its value grow.
