city, capital city of state/province/region
Established in 1959, Awassa is one of the youngest and fast-growing cities in Ethiopia. It lies on the east-facing shores of Lake Awassa in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), some 275 km (171 miles) south of Addis Ababa along the main Addis-Moyale highway.
In late 1960s, Awassa succeeded Yirga Alem as a capital of the former Sidama Province. And during the time of Derg (military regime), in late 1970s, the city was designated as the seat of the Southern Administrative Regions, which included four of the former provinces, Arsi, Bale, Gamo Gofa and of course, Sidama. In 1994, it became the capital of the Soutern Regional State, and Sidama Zone.
Awassa is home to a number of industries, including Tabor Ceramics Factory, Awassa Textile Factory, Sisal Factory, Edible Oil Mill and the Awassa Flour Mill.
