South Ossetia (Ossetic: Хуссар Ирыстон, Khussar Iryston; Russian: Южная Осетия, Yuzhnaya Osetiya; Georgian: სამხრეთი ოსეთი, Samkhreti Oseti) is a de facto independent republic in the South Caucasus, formerly the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. The capital is Tskhinvali.

The de facto independent republics of Abkhazia, Transnistria, and South Ossetia recognized each other's independence on 17 November 2006. The first member of the United Nations to recognize South Ossetia was the Russian Federation on 26 August 2008, followed by Nicaragua on 3 September and Venezuela on 10 September 2009.
