Germany / Nordrhein-Westfalen / Cologne / Ursulaplatz
listed building / architectural heritage, Roman Catholic church

St. Ursula is one of the twelve landmark churches in the Old town (Altstadt) of Cologne. The church was built upon the ancient ruins of a Roman cemetery, where the legend says that the 11,000 virgins of Saint Ursula find their eternal peace.
St. Ursula was originally dedicated to the Holy Virgin, however, numerous mortal remains were found during building works considered to be the remains of 11,000 female martyrs who died together with the Breton princess Ursula.
