Battery Bluff (San Francisco, California)

USA / California / Broadmoor / San Francisco, California
Second World War 1939-1945, artillery battery, closed / former military

Battery Bluff was originally built here in 1937 to protect nearby Battery Davis against small, fast enemy ships. The 155mm M1917A1 guns were moved south of Battery Davis in 1941 due to rapid erosion of the bluff while the four concrete Panama mounts were left behind. Over the ensuing years, the mounts have slid down the cliff one by one to their current positions on the beach.

The second location of Battery Bluff was located west of the former Nike SF-59 barracks. Although a Veterans' Administration hospital was planned and the site was graded, nothing came of it. Nothing remains of the second site of Battery Bluff.
