‘NETRA’ has been setup within NTPC to develop a wide spectrum of technologies in both fundamental and applied domain targeted to actualize organizations destinations and business plan through carrying out in-house and out-house research work. ‘NETRA’ has identified 7 robust destinations for itself which are essentially directed towards providing efficient, reliable, clean and affordable power on a sustainable basis. These seven destinations are:

* Economic Power
* Clean Power
* Scientific Support to Utilities
* Demand Side Management
* Safety & Health
* Company Diversified Areas

These destinations are to be actualized over a pre-defined time frame. As it is apparent, achieving these destinations would entail development of varied basket of technologies – each differing significantly from the other in the fundamental research component required for it. Accordingly,NETRA has identified a portfolio of technologies that are indicated in the table above.

It is obvious from the aforesaid table that the technology baskets are highly varied and diverse in nature. Also, probably for each of the said technologies, some vital elements and links are missing which needs to be developed through intensive research. Nonetheless, development of each of these technologies would typically require one or a combination of several elements mentioned in seriatim i.e. starting with technology forecasting, identification of technological gaps, carrying out appropriate and adequate research for development of ‘efficient solutions’, smartly engineering the product and culminating in development of complete technology around it. As it is apparent and obvious from the above, development of a technology is totally different from merely engineering the same. Also, the complex and intricate research work is to be carried out by a spectrum of highly qualified scientists. Hence it was felt that the organization structure of NETRA ought to be an organic one and an intelligent fit so as to seamlessly and coherently encompass its various work domains.
