The 3000-acre Sespe Oil Field was discovered in 1887 and has since produced about 50 million barrels of oil. The field contains more than 300 oil wells, 210 of which are active.

As reported in the LA Times 8/9/2008, a hot spot of land of about 2-acres has been found to have a 812 deg. F /433 deg. C temperature. Geologists attribute burning hydrocarbons as they are exposed to air through cracks in the ground.
