Christ Church Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral in Vancouver, British Columbia. Christ Church, located at 690 Burrard Street at the north-east corner of Georgia and Burrard Streets directly across from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, is the cathedral of the Diocese of New Westminster in the Anglican Church of Canada. The first cathedral of the Diocese of New Westminster was Holy Trinity Cathedal in New Westminster. When Christ Church was designated as the new cathedral in 1925, the old cathedral retained the designation as cathedral as a courtesy and to assuage discontent. On land bought from the Canadian Pacific Railway, the parish church of Christ Church was built in 1889 and nicknamed the 'Root House' as only the lower part of the church was built and services were held in it. Eventually, financing allowed construction to continue and the cornerstone of the cathedral was laid on July 28, 1894, with the cathedral being dedicated on February 17, 1895.
