I.B.B. is named after the former military President of Nigeria, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. The idea of a standard Golf Course in the Federal Capital Territory was conceived in 1986 with the relocation of government ministries and parastatals from Lagos to Abuja. The construction of the first nine holes and the club house started in 1987. The Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) commissioned the Golf Course in 1991. With the completion of the second nine holes in 1994 the Club became a standard 18 holes course. The course, a par 72 bisected by a number of streams, ponds and lakes with about 25 bridges, is one of the most beautiful parkland courses in sub-saharan Africa, occupying a total area of 101 hectaresand the playing distance of6,098 metres. Designed by an international golf course specialist all works, i.e. earth moving, landscaping, watering sys-tems, drainage and garden-ing, were carried out by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC.
