invisible, metro station
Bethnal Green has an underground station on the Central Line of the London Underground. It was completed just before World War II started but trains did not begin running after the war ended, during which it had been used as an air-raid shelter.
In 1943 air-raid sirens sounded and 300 people walked in an orderly way down into the station. However, when a new secret type of anti-aircraft rocket was launched from nearby, many people mistook this for a German bomb and panicked, and when someone tripped it caused a crowd crush which killed 174 people. The Bethnal Green Crush was the worst ever loss of life on the London Underground.
