Aberdeen Street is located in the centre of the so-called "Student Ghetto" of Kingston, just north of the university campus. It is famous for its street party during the annual Homecoming Weekend. Queen's Alumni return to Kingston for a special football game, and inevitably a mix of students and alumni, numbering 5000-7000 in 2005, will converge on the street for a spontaneous and often illegal party. This event takes place, much to the chagrin of Kingston Police, Kingston residents, Queen's administration, and the majority of Queen's 15000 students.
After a costly policing exercise in 2006 Queen's University bought the last remaining home on the street. The university is continuing to try to reduce the problems on the street by self-policing and encouraging alternative social events during Home Coming.
