The Sauchiehall Centre (Glasgow)

United Kingdom / Scotland / Glasgow
 store / shop, shopping mall

Opened in 1974 as the Sauchiehall Street Centre it was Glasgow's first modern covered shopping mall with a built in multi-storey car park. It replaced Pettigrew & Stephens, a very fine Edwardian department store that was taken over by House of Fraser in the early 1970s, but was subsequently closed.

The original anchor tenant was Arnotts, but this closed in the 1980s triggering a redevelopment which saw the atrium refurbished and the very grand stained glass clock removed. The writing was on the wall however when it found itself up against the newer St. Enoch Centre and Buchanan Galleries, to whom it lost most of its tenants.

To remedy matters, half the building was hived off and converted into a health club in 2001, but this too foundered. In the end, what was left of the mall was scrapped and the floors turned over to a giant Primark and an equally giant TK Maxx, the other half becoming a nightclub. The WH Smith store (formerly John Menzies) is the only original tenant from the '70s that has stayed.
