Public executions of high-profile criminals and others were carried out on this site on Tower Hill. Among the over 100 beheaded here were Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham in 1521, Bishop John Fisher and Sir Thomas More in 1535, Guilford Dudley (husband of Lady Jane Grey) in 1554, Archbishop William Laud in 1645 and Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat in 1747 (the last man to be beheaded in England). There is a marker here along with bronze tablets listing the names of some of those who died here.
