The rest area is named for Thomas Edison, American inventor born in Ohio in 1847. Thomas Edison worked most of his life in Menlo Park and West Orange New Jersey inventing the electric light and the phonograph and improving on other inventions such as the telephone, motion picture camera and electric power distribution. In 1882 he opened a power station on Pearl Street in New York City provided lower Manhattan with its first taste of electric lighting. Thomas Edison died in his home in West Orange in 1931 active in his company till the very end.
