The 463-foot, 34-story tower was completed in 1925. The tower is neo-gothic in design and features flying buttresses at the crown. Its design the result of a famous architecture competition in the 1920s that was won by the firm of Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells. The lowest level of the building has 136 stones and other material fragments from famous sites from around the world embedded into the walls. Included are fragments from the Alamo, Notre Dame, Berlin Wall, Great Pyramid of Giza, Hagia Sophia, Cologne Cathedral, Omaha Beach, Great Wall of China, the Parthenon, Houses of Parliament, Taj Mahal, the White House, and others.

The building was turned into condominiums in 2020.
