The Arts Mountain (City of Brussels)

The arts mountain (French: Mont des Arts, Dutch: Kunstberg) is a area in the centre of Brussels. Historically this was the location of the Saint-Roch quarter (Dutch: Sint-Rochuswijk), one of the oldest parts of the city of Brussels. It was demolished around 1900 to make room for a grand museum in the same style as the Brussels Law Courts. It took years to find the funds, because of that King Leopold II asked a French architect to design a temporary park. In 1910 the park was opened and was very popular with the local inhabitants.
In the late '50 of the 20th century the park was demolished to make room for the newly designed Royal Library, a underground parking and the Congress Palace. A new much simpler and more modernist park was built on top of the congress palace.
