Formed in 1784 from Cumberland County. Its county seat is Carthage.

This largely agrarian county has had its share of mills along the US 1 and railroad corridor. In addiition, the southern part of the county has developed a significant golf economy. Pinehurst and Southern Pines have world class golf courses and host major golf tournaments.
