Henrichshutte Steelworks Museum (Хаттинген)

Germany / Nordrhein-Westfalen / Hattingen / Хаттинген
museum, place with historical importance, steelworks

Henrichshütte Steel Works was founded in 1854 by Duke Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode

In 1987 the last blast furnace was extinguished despite a violent campaign of protest from the local population. The basic reason behind this was the deficiencies inherent in the site itself, the general crisis in the steel industry and competition from Japan and the USA. Because the works were so far inland there was no suitable harbour. This meant that the raw materials and goods which were taken to and fro from the works had to be loaded and unloaded on several occasions before reaching their destination

In 1988/89 blast furnace II was dismantled by Chinese workers and rebuilt again for production in China. The central area around blast furnace III was spared the fate of demolition and in 1989 became the site of the present LWL Industrial Museum. The permanent exhibition is a tribute to the hard work and life endured by the workers, and gives visitors some idea of the importance of Hattingen as an identification symbol.
