Formed in 1779. Its county seat is Asheboro.

The mill towns along the railroads and US 220 and US 64 highway corridors shaped the history of the county. The county's biggest attraction is the North Carolina Zoo, a world class zoological park, which attracts visitors from all over the state and from adjoining parts of Virginia and South Carolina.
