The airport is run by the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport Authority, a not for profit organization. The airport, privatized in 1997, was previously run by the Federal Government of Canada.
A new state-of-the-art, 15 gate passenger terminal was opened on October 12, 2003 and resides just to the north of the old terminal. This is known as Phase I of the Airport Expansion Program (AEP). The building cost $310 million to design and construct and was fully funded by an Airport Improvement Fee paid by air travelers using the facility.
Phase II of the AEP will see the new terminal expanded to the south and the old terminal demolished. Total cost of this phase is budgeted at $109 million and construction will begin in 2006 and be completed in 2008.
The old terminal building was opened in 1959 and was last expanded and rennovated in 1987. Due to passenger traffic demands a link between the old and new terminal was constructed and currently 7 gates from the old building are used in conjunction with the 15 gates of the new facility. This terminal will be demolished as part the AEP's Phase II.
