castle, monastery, interesting place
Derneburg Castle and its domain were bought in 2006 by the American art collector Andrew Hall, who wants to house his contemporary art collection with works by Georg Baselitz here. The Laves cultural path leads through the former landscape garden of the castle.
The former Herrenhof Derneburg was donated to the Hildesheim church in 1143. 70 years later, Augustinians from Holle founded a monastery here, which was closed at the beginning of the 14th century and handed over to the Cistercian reform order in 1441. In the times of the Reformation, Derneburg was a Lutheran virgin convent before it came back into the hands of the Cistercians in 1651. They built the agricultural buildings and a new baroque monastery church was built between 1735 and 1749 under Abbot Arnu.
The monastery was closed at the beginning of the 19th century and fell to the Welfish Kingdom after the Vienna Congress of 1814. King George III Derneburg gave to his influential minister Graf zu Münster, who, together with the architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, had the former monastery rebuilt and created an English landscape garden all around.
