Beijing National Stadium (Beijing)

The Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed the "Bird's Nest" due to its architecture, is a multipurpose stadium located at the Olympic Green in Beijing. The stadium was designed by Herzog & De Meuron, with assistance from the China Architectural Design and Research Group. It was constructed from December 2003 to May 2008 at a cost of US$423,000,000. The stadium's structure consists of an exterior steel frame containing a concrete seating bowl. 24 trussed columns encase the inner bowl, and all 110,000 tons of steel were made within China. The stadium's east and west stands are higher than the north and south stands. A 24/7 rainwater collector is located near the stadium; after purification, the rainwater is used around and throughout the stadium. A pipe system placed under the playing area gathers heat in winter and coldness in summer. The three-tier stadium has an all-seater capacity of 91,000 with 140 luxury boxes. It has a floor area of 250,000 sq m (2,690,977 sq ft) and has a length of 330 metres north-south by a width of 220 metres east-west.

The National Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the athletics competitions, and the football final of the 2008 Summer Olympics and the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events of the 2008 Summer Paralympics. Other events hosted or to be hosted in the stadium include the 2009 Race of Champions, the 2009 Supercoppa Italiano Final, and the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

  • Thany You, My Chinese Friends for such a wonderful opening ceremony...this will etched forever in our hearts such as the magical presentations using state of the art technology, the parade of athletes with passing at the art in the center leaving their footprints, and the most dramatic of all...the lighting of the cauldron with the athlete flying at the rim of the bird's nest with unrolling the scroll projected at the rim towards the cauldron. I Wish All Athletes Good Luck!!!
