Skardu is in fact the name of a small town in Northwest Pakistan, nestled right on the border with India, and used as a base for campaigns to climb K2.
Skardu is the principle town and capital of Baltistan (North Pakistan).Skardu is located in the 10 km wide by 40km long Skardu Valley, at the confluence of the Indus river and the Shigar river. Skardu is situated at an altitude of nearly 2,500 m (8,200 feet), the town is surrounded by gray-brown coloured mountains, which hide the 8,000 metre peaks of the nearby Karakoram range
