Fort Point US Coast Guard Station (San Francisco, California)

USA / California / San Francisco / San Francisco, California
place with historical importance, coastguard station

Constructed in 1890 for the US Life-Saving Service (precusor to today's USCG), Fort Point Coast Guard Station was originally located 700-feet east of its current location. It was moved here in 1915 to accomodate the former Panama-Pacific International Exposition speedway, demolished in 1917.
Because the new 44-foot craft (CG-44300) introduced in 1963 was too large to fit on the marine railway once next to the catwalk, it was kept permanently moored at the end of the boat dock. The crews used to swing on a rope to reach the surf boats tied up off the end of the dock in deeper water. The marine railway was allowed to deteriorate until its removal in 1978.

The station was deactived by the Coast Guard in 1990.
