Temple: The greatest of Chola emperors Rajaraja-I (985 AD-1012 AD) the son of Sundara Chola (Parantakaa-II) built this magnificent temple named Brihadisvaram at Thanjavur, the capital of Chola dynasty. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Great Living Chola Temples". The temple was named as Rajarajesvaram by Rajaraja, now it is called “Brahadisvaram” in Sanskrit and Peruvudaiyar Koil in Tamil.
Vimana: The 'Vimana' or the temple tower is 216 ft high (60.96m) and is among the tallest of its kind in the world. Rajaraja-I a great devotee of Lord Shiva called the Sri Vimana as Maha Meru or South Kailash.
Shikaram: The 'Shikharam/Crown' (bulbous structure on the top) of the temple is very large and heavy (81.25 tons). The entire temple structure is made out of hard granite stones - hardly available in Thanjavur area where the temple is located.
Lingam: The Lingam measures 9 ft in height, 23.5 ft in circumference. The Lingam was brought from the shores of Narmadha River. This Lingam is also called as "Raja Rajeswara Mudaiyan" because of its bright appearance.
Nandhi: The Nandi (the divine vehicle of Lord Shiva) is a monolith measuring 12 feet in height, 19.5 feet in length and 18.25 feet in width, it weighs about 25 tons. This is the second biggest Nandhi in India. On the ceiling of the Nandi Mantapam, are colorful frescos that are over 1000 years old and still maintain their magnificence.

Nayak kings added the latest addition of Nandimandapa and the Subramanya shrine.
King Sarfoji II a Maratta ruler contributed to his part by the Ganapati shrine in the southwest Prakara during 1801 A.D.
The 10th century AD site is an example of Dravidian temple architecture. The central temple called the Periya Koyil, or big temple, stands inside a fort whose walls were built later on in the 16th century. The Great Living Chola Temples consist of the 11th century Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur, the 11th century Brihadisvara temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram, and the 12th century Airavateswara temple at Darasuram.
Temple consists of the garbhagriha, ardhamandapa, mahamandapa and mukhamandapa and aligned on the east- west axis. This site is recognised by UNESCO.
