Széki Péter a once was small-holder and military engineer, started to create his 'promenade garden' perhaps to provide facilities for pleasant recreation in the summer. The little garden might not have turned into an arboretum if it had not been for the outstanding expertise of the founder, who developed it continuously: he planted white- and black poplars, ashes, oaks in the garden.
The originally appointed area of two hectares was located in a former bed of the Tisza, which had separated and got filled up by that time, but the son of the founder expanded the arboretum to nine hectares. In connection with his friendship with the founder of the Szarvas Arboretum the famous Pepi Gardens he received new taxons contionuously to enrich the stock of the gardens. The majority of the pines, ornamental shrubs and exotas were planted at that period. The level of development is indicated by the fact that saplings from the nursery of the arboretum got as far as the Zirc arboretum and Margitsziget (Margarete Island in Budapest).
After the war in the 1950th the park was further extended and new species were planted. At present about four hundred species of trees and shrubs can be found in the arboretum with more than a hundred pine species among them. The most valuable part of the park is perhaps the ancient forest of yews, the collection of oaks with such valuable species as the Persian oak, the white oak, the pedunculate oak, or the laurel oak (Quercus laurifolia). Among the rare trees of the arboretum with a pleasant atmosphere one can come across pomegranates, ambres, or yellowwoods.
