Built in the late 1890's or early 20th century, the locals said not to build there due the currents... but government went ahead anyway. The steamship docking there at the inaugural landing was pushed up against the wharf and almost brought it down then.
Presently - it is a rotting remnant of steel and concrete. Fishermen used to toss lines off of it, but now it too dangerous to allow people to walk on it at all. Big storms continue to toss up surf which takes another chunk down.

Mala is a small settlement on the N side of Puunoa Point. The concrete wharf at Mala is in poor condition and is no longer in use. A breakwater extends along the NE side of the Mala wharf. Anchorage can be had anywhere in the bight N of Mala wharf, 0.6 mile offshore in depths of about 12 fathoms, sandy bottom. It is reported that the current near the wharf at Mala sets S most of the time. [www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/nsd/coastpilot_w.php?book=7] Chapter 14
