The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a through arch bridge crossing Sydney Harbour in Sydney, Australia. Throughout its existance, it has been an iconic symbol of Sydney and Australia, and has been the focal point of much tourism and national pride. It is also an integral part of Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations.
The bridge has a total length of 1,149 m (3,770 ft), a width of 49 m (161 ft), a height of 139 m (456 ft), a main span of 503 m (1,650 ft), and a clearance of 49 m (161 ft) below the deck. At each end of the arch stands a pair of 89 m (292 ft) concrete pylons faced with granite. The bridge was designed by Dorman Long and Co Ltd and was constructed from July 1923 to January 1932 at a cost of $10,000,000. It currently has eight road traffic lanes, two rail tracks, and a lane for pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge accommodated a tram line until 1958. The roadway across the bridge is named the Bradfield Highway. Since 1998, BridgeClimb has made it possible for tourists to climb the southern half of the bridge.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1988 and was added to the Australian National Heritage List on 19 March 2007.
