Established in 1993 as Malaysia's pioneer distribution center within the Free Commercial Zone (FCZ) of Port Klang, NDSB has become an integral part of Northport's wide array of services created for customers convenience.

For the warehousing and distribution of containerized cargo, Northport offers the most added values through NDSB and Container Freight Stations (CFS). They are situated at unique locations within the port area. This service offers a substantial concentration of facilities having to do with distribution operations. And it is this concentration that yields advantages in terms of both time and transport costs for customers.

Currently NDSB offers a wide range of services, which include warehousing, pre-shipment activities such as documentation, internal haulage, packing and relabelling, minor assembly and other value-added activities to complement the core business activities at Northport. Contents of containers are stored here, processed if necessary and then distributed further.

In line with its effort to become a major logistics and distribution centre and further intensify Northport's capability as a total provider of port-related services, NSDB provides the largest covered warehouse in the country totaling 1 million sq.ft to cater for the requirements of its clientele.

Leveraging on its excellent shipping and intermodal connectivity, the port operating company's wholly-owned subsidiary, Northport Distripark Sdn Bhd, has made strong inroads into the value-adding services offered at its distripark in Northport in Port Klang. The distripark handled a total of a 136,727 TEUs last year, which is an increase of 4.2% over the volume of containers handled the previous year. The expanding role of the 40ha Distripark is pushing Northport up the value chain rapidly and is complemented with 12 units of warehouses , totalling 1 million sq feet space. Disclosing this. Northport managing director/chief executive officer Datuk Basheer Hassan said the expansion of the value-added services by the distripark was critical in further strengthening the role of the port in the inter- national trade of the country. "Invariably too, the new source of growth also represents positive growth drivers for the company in the years ahead. "With the inherent advantage of Northport, that is linked to more than 300 ports worldwide, the location of our distripark within the commercial zone of Port Klang, a competent work- force, a high level of IT application and a competitive port pricing, we have been able to transform the logistic distripark into a cargo hub centre for regional distribution activi- ties," he said. Basheer said Northport's efforts to integrate its core services with the value-added logistics services as part of their response to the changing functionalities in the transport and logistics pipeline have yielded positive results. He noted that the distripark's successes could be attributed to several lead logistics players and cargo consolidators setting up base at Northport. In 2005, Kuehne and Nagel relocated its multi-country consolidation traffic services to its new cargo hub located at Northport. Currently Northport is used as the cargo hub by Kuehne and Nagel to rework its Eastbound, Westbound and Regional Distribution containers. Several leading 3PL (Third Logistics) players, lnternation Consolidators and Freight. Forwarders are using Northport as the load center, who among others include NYK Logistics, Quanti Freight, Nistrans, Globelink,Freight Management and lnterocean Services, who are generating cargo volumes. In September, Clark Shoes International, working in strategic alliance with NYK Logistics, s using Northport Distripark as its regional consolidation and distibution centre for value adding activities such as bar-coding scanning, pack, sorting and labeling prior to re export. Looking ahead at the prospects, Basheer said with the liberalistation in the automotive sector under the Asean Free Trade Area (AFTA), exponential growth in volume of cars import, export and re-export through Port Klang in CBU forms is expected to increase further. He said leading carmakers are expected to capitalize on AFTA to assemble the various car models in the Asean market to reap economies of scale. UMW Toyota has also nominated Northport as its discharge port and staging area for 600 units of import, export and re-export cars per month via Northport that now records an average of 15 ro-ro (roll on roll off) ship calls monthly. Total car throughput projected for Northport this year is expected to exceed 120,000 units per year.
